E-safety - education over prevention

Every day we see astonishing and concerning statistics about the issues facing young people online. The BBC has BETT 2009 seemed to suggest that the only solution to e-safety was to block access. Whilst I appreciate that schools have an obvious requirement to protect their pupils, this approach is clearly limited to online access across school-owned hardware.  Web enabled phones and home computers are not going to be covered.  The only viable long-term approach is to educate young people about the issues facing them online and to provide them with appropriate support materials Keeping Myself e-Safe follows this principle of education over prevention, and I guess this is why the resource has been so popular with schools since its release at the start of February.

Given the statistics above, I think the next thing we need to consider is a toolkit which educates parents about e-safety, highlighting the online issues which face their children today.
